 |   Manolis Kalomiris' Symphony No. 1 "Levendia"
March 25, 2006 - Dearborn, MI The Ford Community & Performing Arts Center's brilliantly lit marquee greeted guests from through out the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Detroit. It announced the performance that evening of Manolis Kalomiris' Symphony No. 1 "Levendia" (Valor) by the Dearborn Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Kypros Markou, accompanied by the Vanguard Voices, director Kevin Dewey, and the Metropolis of Detroit Choir director, George S. Raptis. The Dearborn Symphony was founded in 1961 and is now in its 43rd year. Conductor Kypros Markou has been in residence since 1997. Under his able guidance the symphony has continued its legacy to provide a quality community orchestra to Dearborn. Their mission has been achieved and has expanded to the entire Detroit Metropolitan Area. (www.dearbornsymphony.org) The evening's performance was a celebration to spring and included, The Russian Easter Overture by Rimsky-Korsakov, and the Symphony No. 1 by Manolis Kalomiris. In addition to the symphony's contribution, the Vanguard voices showcased: Come, Gentle Spring, Franz Joseph Haydn, Laudate Dominum, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, The Hymn to Kassiane, George S. Raptis, The Promise of Living, Aaron Copeland, and a rousing rendition of Hallelujah from "Handel's Messiah: A Soulful Celebration." The entire performance was inspiring. The symphony's haunting rendition of the Kalomiris' The Nikitiria (The Victory) was majestic and was a tribute to the glory of the Greek struggle. The Metropolis Choir joined the Vanguard singers to further enhance the presentation for a breathtaking finale, which ended in a thunderous triumph.
