Winter's A Blast
In Detroit Winter Blast is Detroit's answer to the winter doldrums; this highly successful event established to enhance the Super Bowl experience in 2005, has become a Detroit fixture. Temperatures may have been frigid but the warmth generated by the crowds, created an electrifying and exciting atmosphere. Planners truly transformed Detroit's Campus Martius Park area into a winter wonderland. Ice sculptures lined the streets from Woodward to Greektown cheerfully greeting visitors to the different venues. Local area restaurants lined the Pure Detroit Tent hawking tantalizing specialties. Chrysler and GM proudly displayed their 2007 lines. A 200ft snow slide sponsored by GM towered over the area and invited kids of all ages to enjoy a ride. The Rink at Campus Martius for skating aficionados was filled with graceful skaters gliding to the pulsing Motown soul filled rhythms. The lobby of the Compuware building hosted offerings from throughout the state on how to enjoy Michigan's winter tourist season. Three Stages hosted entertainment with a theme to please any palate, the Michigan Lottery Stage for Rock, Fifth Third for Jazz and the Meijer Stage for kid friendly activities. Sunday afternoon, one of the featured Rock groups, Bump, featured lead singer, Yorg Kerasiotis. The tent was packed to capacity with fans that rocked in rhythm to the pulsating performance. Greektown and the Compuware Building boasted personalized ice sculptures, Compuware, Mosaics, Pappys, Golden Fleece, Pegasus, with the crowning ice presentation an enormous "Spirit of Detroit" located at the Greektown entrance immediately in front of Fishbone's Rhythm Kitchen. Patrons filled local area restaurants, and the sounds of merriment could be heard in the street, "OPA!" Developers, contributors and supporting businesses are to be congratulated for again providing a opportunity to make "Winter a Blast" in Detroit. Malista!
