Team
Malista to Walk 3 Day for Breast Cancer - September 28, 2007
Hello Everyone!
The Three Day 60 Mile Breast Cancer Walk was this past weekend..
Team MALISTA raised over $18,000 for the cause!
60 miles was not easy to walk...
but it was very inspirational experience.
Although Team Malista visited the blister tent and medical tent on a daily basis, we managed to pull through..
..there was even a cell phone casualty into the port-a-potty....(mine, of course)

Team Malista – 3 Day Walk Starts September 28, 2007 Pledge Today! The Route
The route is well marked with arrows and instructional signage; simply follow the signs – and the walkers in front of you! Day One – 18.8 Miles
The journey begins at Oakland Community College - Orchard Ridge and weaves through some of metro Detroit’s most beautiful neighborhoods. Enjoy walking past tree-lined streets, historic buildings and downtown neighborhoods. You will see plenty of parks and historic homes as you make your way into camp.
Day Two – 20.1 Miles
Day Two begins with even more quiet neighborhoods filled with parks galore. You'll walk through historic Hines Drive and catch a glimpse of local lakes. Pass by some of metro Detroit’s downtown communities and tree-lined streets as your journey ends back at camp.
Day Three – 15.5 Miles
Day Three makes its way to the Henry Ford and highlights much of metro Detroit’s history and beauty. Enjoy walking along Hines Drive and its tree-lined trails and beautiful parks. Take in views of the Henry Ford Community College and University of Michigan-Dearborn campuses as you make your way to the River Rouge Gateway Trail. Your journey leaves you off with final views of downtown Dearborn and plenty of signs of Detroit’s automobile history as you make you way into Holding/Closing at the Henry Ford/Greenfield Village, one of the country’s greatest historical attractions.
The Breast Cancer 3-Day staff works diligently to create an ideal route that is both safe and scenic. Exact mileage per event varies according to a number of factors along the route such as Pit Stops, Camp, as well as Opening and Closing site locations. The amount of daylight hours also impacts the total event mileage as it dictates the amount of time the route can be kept open safely.
The route will generally open around 6:30 am and close around 7:00 pm, other conditions permitting. Every two to three miles along the way, you’ll find a pit stop or grab & go. A grab & go offers portable toilets, water, and sports drinks. Pit stops are larger and include all the services of a grab & go as well as snacks and medical crew. We suggest the following guidelines for breaks: 10-15 minutes at each stop, and 30 minutes at lunch, depending on your pace.
All pit stops have designated opening and closing hours, timed to keep you moving along the route at a reasonable and safe pace. If you reach a pit stop before it opens, you will be asked to stop and wait. If you reach a pit stop after it closes, you will be transported to lunch or camp (whichever is next). If you need to get to a pit stop and are unable to walk into it, a sweep van can transport you from the route into the next pit stop. Sweep vans do not pick up from pit stops and do not drop off at grab and go's. If you are done walking for the day, get on a SAG bus, which are stationed at each pit stop and lunch. If you board a SAG bus prior to lunch you will be taken directly to lunch. If you board a SAG bus after lunch, you will be taken directly to camp. Fundraiser
for Three Day Walk July 28, 2007Host: Stephanie Novotny
Location: FIGO Salon 265 N. Old
Woodward, Birmingham, MI 48009
When: Saturday, July 28, 5:00PM
Phone: 248-505-5499A cut and blow dry
will cost $30 from 5-8 p.m., that day, with all proceeds going to the
walk, which benefits Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The nonprofit organization
is dedicated to fighting breast cancer by funding research, early detection
and outreach programs to patients. Only walk-ins will be accepted at the
salon, located at 265 North Woodward. Lena Gjoka, a stylist,
pitched the idea to owners and staff at the salon after her client, Stephanie
Novotny of White Lake, a member of Team Malista, told her about the walk
that will cover 60 miles Sept. 28-30. "The owner of
the salon loved the idea. Everyone except for two people who will be on
vacation, will be there," Gjoka said. Thirteen salon staff members
and a few hair stylists from other salons will volunteer for the benefit.
"I just want
to make a lot of money, as much as we can. Everything we make that day
will be donated," said Gjoka, whose aunt is a breast cancer survivor.
Novotny's mother,
Erasmia Novotny of White Lake, is a two-time cancer survivor. She had
surgery after being diagnosed in 1999 and again in 2006 after the disease
reappeared. Novotny's aunt also is a breast cancer survivor. "This is my
first three-day walk. I thought, what a great way to spread awareness,"
said Novotny, a manager at Oliver Trendz in downtown Birmingham. Although
Novotny, 21, has walked in other breast cancer benefits, none have been
quite as demanding as the 3-Day, which requires each participant to cover
20 miles each day and raise at least $2,200. "I've raised $4,300.
I want to raise $5,000 by September," Novotny said. Her team has
raised about $12,000. Novotny said the
toughest challenge so far is getting in shape to walk 20 miles a day.
She started training and fund-raising in February. "The reason
I like this walk is that it takes a portion of the money and uses it for
outreach," she said. In addition to funding
breast cancer research, a portion of funds will help breast cancer patients
with counseling and financial support. Novotny named the
team "malista" to honor her mother. Malista is a "positive"
Greek word that her mother frequently uses. "Everyone knows her by
that word. She always says malista when she answers the phone." Novotny's also accepting
donations for Team Malista at www.the3day.org/michigan07/malista.
Gjoka also has collected
donations for the team at Figo Salon. "I just had three women donate
just now," Gjoka said. "They're not even coming back on Saturday,
but they donated." Figo Salon's phone
number is (248) 723-7990. The Web site for the Michigan Breast Cancer
3-Day is www.the3day.org/michigan. :http://www.the3day.org/michigan07/malista

breast health, including the importance of early detection. Breast Cancer
3-Day participants commit to raising a minimum of $2,200 and walking an
average of 20 miles a day during each three-day event. Proceeds from the
Breast Cancer 3-Day are used for breast cancer research, education, and
community outreach programs. As the primary beneficiary of the Breast
Cancer 3-Day, Susan G. Komen for the Cure receives 85 percent of net proceeds

and Readers...As many of you know,
my mother, Erasmia Novotny, has been battling breast cancer since November
for the 2nd time...It has been a tough few months, but we are looking
forward to the near future where we will celebrate a new beginning. So,
with that in mind, I'm writing you to share news about a new spiritual
journey I am getting ready for....You would think a
busy person like me would have more sense than to volunteer to walk 60
miles and camp out for the night! Well, I guess I don't, because when
I heard about this new challenge, you know I couldn't resist! It's called the
Breast Cancer 3-Day. I am going to be walking (or crawling) 60 miles
over the course of three days, for a cause devoted to helping women discover
breast cancer early enough to beat it and committed to finally finding
a cure. As a condition of participation, I must raise at least $2,200.
Proceeds benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Philanthropic
Trust Breast Cancer Fund.Just click the link
below to go to my personal fundraising webpage and learn more about this
exciting challenge I am about to begin! This certainly promises to be
an unforgettable experience.Sincerely,
Angela Novotny
