It's a Spring Thing!
by Contributing Writer Elena Kerasiotis

Rochester, MI - May 12, 2007 - Spring was welcomed to the Detroit Metro area in style, when the Daughters of Penelope, Doris and Iphthime Chapters jointly hosted their "Spring Affair" at the Royal Park Hotel in downtown Rochester. The weather cooperated with the theme and guests enjoyed entering the sun filled room overlooking a panoramic view of the Hotel's wonderfully manicured landscape. Presidents, Peggy Collias, Doris Chapter, Bloomfield and Maria Spounias, Iphthime Chapter, Troy, warmly welcomed attendees and thanked them for supporting the charitable works so important to the Daughters. Maria shared a brief history of Penelope and her commitment to the virtues of patience and loyalty, qualities the Daughters aspire to attain.

Rev. Fr. Stratton Dorozenski, Proistamenos of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Community in Troy, offered the benediction and prayed for the continued health of the organization and member's efforts to support the church and other philanthropic endeavors. Luncheon entrees included: Salad, Chicken Picatta, fresh vegetables, and a lusciously light mousse cup. Committee Members/Hostesses were introduced: Zoe Styloglou, Peggy Collias, Nitsa Mortis, Cleo Pasvant, Tina Prevas (Doris) and Maria Spounias, Liza Papageorgiou, Penny Seaborn and Effie Iwankowski (Iphthime) and gratefully commended for their contribution to the days festivities.

A silent auction with a wide array of selections was hotly monitored by bidders and the committee offered thanks to contributors: Royal Park Hotel/Parlor EF, McCormick and Schmick's, Trader Joe's, Hagopian Carpets, Macy's Premier Salons, Pangborn Design/N. Van Houten, Metropolis Restaurant, Panos Salon, Dr. Daniel Jenaras, and Emery's Jewelry.

Nitsa Mortis generously gifted the centerpieces. Especially beguiling were the bi-sectioned crystal vases, artfully arranged by Irene Hatziantoniou whose profusion of multicolored pastel blooms invitingly adorned each table. Joanne Recclina Kallabat, Nordstrom's Kleraderm Cosmetic Counter and Shiseido, Macy's Cosmetics donated facial party favors.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the AHEPA District #10 Educational Foundation and other charitable projects supported by the groups.

The Daughters of Penelope is a the women's affiliate of the AHEPA Family, a national Greek-American organization, with chapters in the United States, Canada, Australia, Greece, and Cyprus, whose mission is to promote Hellenism, Education, Philanthropy, Civic Responsibility, Family and Individual Excellence.
