Going, Going, Sold,
to paddle number #443, with "shopping therapy" receptors poised,
auction visitors were treated to a wide buffet of selections, from electronics
to art everyone could find their item of interest. Over 300 satisfied
donors and shoppers participated in this year's first auction to benefit
the Metropolis of Detroit Summer Camp (MDSC), "For Love of Camp."
Gathering from the
guest list of staff, campers, and friends, the committee got the message
out. "We need your help, for the love of camp!" And they came,
and they had a great time; strolling to food stations, perusing silent
auction items, rushing to enter that final bid, driven by the commanding
voice of the auctioneer, Steve Gross, Premier Auction Services, announcing
the closing of the next section.
Renewing friendships,
families laughing with one another over a shared memory, young people
hawking raffle tickets 3 for $25, "what a bargain."
The waves of people
moving past item after item, suddenly looking up into the face of a long
lost friend, a bit weathered by life, but strengthened by purpose, 266
silent auction items, 30 live auction items, benefactors, sponsors, supporters
all uniting into a powerful force "For Love of Camp."
Board members share,
"It is because of our young people, past, present and future. Since
the opening of the camp in 1952, our summer camp has touched and enriched
the lives of thousands of Metropolis youth. Youth that made friendships
to last a lifetime."
The words of Metropolitan
Nicholas summarize the events impact, "My friends, the vision of
all those who have labored for the MDSC and those who have been the beneficiaries
of all that it offers have brought us to this important day. While we
congratulate all those who have put forth time and effort towards this
great task, we ask that we continue to give from the abundance that God
has bestowed upon us and our families to achieve this dream."
Special recognition
