The Hellenic Museum and Cultural Center "Has Made it in Chicago"

The Hellenic Museum "Has Made it in Chicago" - New Exhibit Celebrates the Greek Immigrant Journey.

The evening of Thursday, September 7, 2006 was certainly a memorable one for the Hellenic Museum and Cultural Center (HMCC) in Chicago. 'Remembering Generations: the Greek Immigrant's Journey,' was incredibly well received by friends and members of the Museum who were invited to the opening reception.

'Remembering Generations' explores the stages of Greek immigration through various works of art, historical artifacts, photographs and documentary materials. The exhibit is split into three galleries: 'Coming to America,' followed by 'Cultural Experience,' and ending with the 'Achievements' room which shows the legacy of the Greeks of America and the ways they continue to give back to the community.

The exhibit investigates Greek immigration on a national level, touching on the communities that settled in place like New York and Duluth, MN, but its main focus is the Greek population of Chicago, with its rich history and influence that can be seen everywhere from Jane Adam's historical Hull House, to the neighborhood now know as Greektown. After all, many Greek immigrants were known to utter the words, 'if I couldn't make it in Chicago, I couldn't make it in America.'

Last week's reception was also in honor of one individual who has been a long- time supporter of the HMCC. James Mezilson was born in Chicago in 1919 to Greek immigrants from Eastern Thrace, and is well known in the community, thanks to his years as a journalist for the Greek Press and the Sun, and his involvement in the Sons of Pericles organization.

'Remembering Generations: the Greek Immigrant's Journey,' was created by guest curators, Olga Garoufalis and Madeline Gelis, along with Allison Heller, Stella Ress and Vivian Haritos. The exhibition was underwritten in part by Anthony A. Antoniou and Irene D. Antoniou, John P. Vlahos and Penelope Vlahos and the 13th District Order of AHEPA.

The Hellenic Museum and Cultural Center's mission is to be the nation's foremost center of Hellenic history, culture and the arts, where the public can explore the legacy of the Greek immigrant experience in America and examine the influence of Hellenic culture and people from antiquity to present. The HMCC will soon open the doors to its permanent residence, an elegant building in Chicago's Greektown.

This fall the HMCC is buzzing with events and programs, including the Chicago debut of Mario Frangoulis. He is a Hellenic heartthrob with a voice that caught Billboard's attention enough to list him as a "Top Cultural Crossover," alongside Andrea Bocelli, Charlotte Church and Josh Groban. And now, critically acclaimed tenor, Mario Frangoulis, will perform in Chicago on Monday, October 9 at the Symphony Center for one night only to benefit the Hellenic Museum and Cultural Center. This will truly be an unforgettable evening! Tickets range from $30 to $200, and can be purchased by visiting www.ticketweb.com, or by calling 866.468.3401. What a perfect excuse for a weekend getaway to Chicago!
