Daughters of Penelope Donate Proving Tables DO Matter!

Merry Christmas Liggett Cancer Center
By Contributing Writer Elena Kerasiotis

Representatives from the Grosse Pointe Chapter of the Daughters of Penelope presented Bernadine Sherwood, Nurse Navigator for the Liggett Center of Grosse Pointe Woods, with a $5,000 donation. Chapter President Dorothea Williams, Event Chair Sandy Moisides, Co-Chairs Dori Daskas and Elena Kerasiotis, along with Bernadine Sherwood, and Mary Ruhana, Manager of the Van Elslander Cancer Center were on hand for the presentation. This donation is from the proceeds of the Daughters' annual fall fundraiser, "Festival of Tables", held this year on October 22rd at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial. The event, now in its fourth year, has become an area standard. Guests were invited to peruse thirty tables decorated with themed displays ranging from "Christmas Holly," to an all pink confection designed by Carolyn Kaczmarek, Sherwood and Ruhana in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness, aptly titled "Hope for the Holidays." Guests enjoyed goodie bags supplied by the Breast Center, and shopped the holiday mart that included items from Jacobson's Alumni, 925 Designs, Chaundy Gallery, Déjà vu Boutique, and Northern Lights Jewelry. Guests for the second viewing bid on a silent auction with over 50 donated items, again chaired by Connie Katikos, and enjoyed a fashion show by local boutique, Jane Woodbury.

Moisides stated that the group was thrilled with the improved attendance and the success of this year's event.

"We would especially like to thank Linda Grippi, Non-Profit Coordinator at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial, and the staff at Grosse Pointe Cable, especially Jeanie McNeal, host of Positively Positive for showcasing the event.

Moisides added, "It's about making a difference in the community and the lives of women. We know that this contribution will help women with special needs go through cancer diagnoses and treatment."

The chapter plans to continue its winning alliance with the Liggett Breast Center and the St. John Foundation, and is pleased to announce that Grosse Pointer, Calli Duncan will chair next year's event scheduled for Sunday, October 21, 2007 at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial in Grosse Pointe, MI. 2007 Festival calendars are available by contacting Sandy Moisides at 313-882-6332.

The group wishes to extend their thanks to all who attended and joined with them to share in the glow and the warmth of the season, proving that "Tables do Matter".

The Daughters of Penelope, the women's affiliate of the AHEPA organization headquartered in Washington, DC, is a leader in philanthropic, educational and cultural activities with local chapters in the United States, Canada, and Greece.
