Salute to Women
March 11, 2006 -Washington, DC The Biennial Salute to Women hosted by the Grand Lodge of the Daughters of Penelope (DOP) under the able chairmanship of Past Grand President Evelyn Tsiades was a "grand" success. This year's outstanding nominee was a fitting selection, Ms. Dora Bakoyannis, first woman Mayor of Athens, recently appointed Secretary of State for the Government of Greece. "In selecting Mayor Bakoyannis, we honor a woman who has made an impact on the world," Tsiadis said. "She has reached great heights in her career and is respected as a leader with the will to formulate policies that positively affect global issues. The tribute was held at the Greek Embassy, which was resplendent with its gracious mahogany spiraling staircase, and luxurious appointments. Guests were personally greeted as they arrived by Greek Ambassador, Alexandros Mallias, and Grand President Mary Filou. Planning and attention to detail was flawless. Although Ms. Bakoyannis was unable to attend the presentation, the brief program was well timed and effective. There was a welcome from Catherine Ferguson, Past Grand President DOP remarks by Evelyn Tsiades, Chairman, PGP, His Excellency Alexandros Mallias, Ambassador of Greece, the Supreme President AHEPA, Gust James, Sons of Pericles Supreme President, Mike Panayotou, Grand President of the Maids of Athena, Maria Mastrokyriakos and Grand President, Mary Filou. Guest speakers ably acknowledged this most distinguished honoree, her accomplishments and her dedication to the country she serves with such passion and distinction. Through the wonders of technology, Ms. Bakoyannis addressed the assembly with a professionally prepared video presentation, thanking the organization for supporting women's causes, the Penelope House in Mobile, Alabama, and their countless philanthropic activities. Guests were overcome by Ms. Bakoyannis' eloquence and recognition of the committee and the Daughters of Penelope Organization. A delegation from Michigan included: AHEPA National Scholarship Chair, Michael Syropoulos, Daughters of Penelope District Governor, Elena Kerasiotis, Lt. Governor, Penny Khorraminia, Treasurer, Dorothea Williams, Nitsa Kourelis, Stavros and Maria Malliaras and Pauline Litos. Malista! |
