ETHNIC PRIDE SHINES AT GREEK INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE

April 2, 2006 - Greektown, Chicago, IL

The annual Greek Independence Day parade brought young and old to Chicago's Greektown, on April 2, 2006. Hellenes and Phil-Hellenes alike came out despite the threatening clouds and light sprinkles, and lined Halsted Street with Greek and American flags. It was a beautiful display of Greek pride, in honor of the 185th anniversary of Greek Independence. Judge Charles P. Kocoras served as grand marshall, and His Eminence Metropolitan Iakovos of Chicago, Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, and various other community leaders packed the VIP stand to watch the celebration. The parade also included churches and schools, many Greek organizations, plus high school bands, ROTCs, floats from local community leaders, including Illinois State Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka, and Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, including his Jesse White Tumblers, who performed for the crowd.
